The article suggests making a distinction between the prototypes of the noun class systems in synchrony and in diachrony. it is demonstrated that the bantu noun class systems (and the Swahili system in particular) which are traditionally regarded as prototypical for the Niger-Congo macrofamily, are, in fact, a “ pseudo-prototype”. Major features of a prototypical Niger-Congo system are postulated. it is emphasized that languages inherit from a proto-language not only its morphemes, but also its structural characteristics, including inner “ conflicts” which existed in the proto-languages.
